INFO PORTAL MOSEL

The Reichsburg Castle in Cochem - A Living Legend

As a link between the distant past and the present, Cochem Castle represents a landmark of the city and of the region. Around the castle yard stand defence turrets which tower overhead, suggesting through their form a direct line to the omnipotence of God.
Sitting on one of the mighty walls and looking down to the romantic Moselle valley you may easily fall in love with this place.
On the right, you see the part of town "Sehl" that is overlooked by the high clock tower of the monastery Ebernach. On the other side are the mighty rocks of "Brauselay", which is also said to be the "Loreley of the Moselle".
You might ask yourself whether the pretty, blond haired Virgin was once sitting along the Rhine River or here ...
Reichsburg Cochem On the western side is also the part of town "Cond" with many historical frame-work houses and a huge colourful leisure-centre, the "Erlebnisbad".
The bridge is the constant connection to the city centre, to the old town of Cochem. Here, the visitor sees the tower of the St. Martin Church, which appears to be higher than the peak of the Pinnerkreuz hill that towers above the town. You can reach it via a chairlift without expending too much effort.
The last view meets the wild and romantic Endert valley and the Ruins of Winnenburg that have crowned the summit for centuries.
It is easy to daydream about the Middle Ages and to forget the daily routine - it is not difficult to answer the question of why the people had chosen this place as their home even then.
Once you have managed to climb up the steep path to the castle, you definitely should not miss the tour. Guided tours, providing detailed information about the historical building, are given regularly every day (from March till November) from 9am until 5pm.
Interested couples can be married by the registry officer in the Chapel of the castle.
More information about this and other offers is available in the castle and from the registry administration of Cochem.
Not only is the castle in a good outward condition, but the inner parts are also filled with remarkable objects of value. You will learn more about the rooms and the vivid historical changes throughout the centuries while being guided through the castle.
Large groups should call ahead for tours and take advantage of the tour offered by the Castle administration. It begins with a reception in the castle chapel, is followed by a tour through the building, and ends with a knight's meal in the historical cellar. The castle overseer greets guests with a stone mug of Moselle wine and gives a short lesson in medieval table manners and customs. Servants bring the guests water to wash their hands so that the guests may eat the meal with their hands. Bread and lard are served along with a hot, spicy meat stock. The main course of a 900g turkey drumstick is a delicious challenge. Cheese and grapes are the crowning touch on the knight's meal.
